Don't Buy the Wrong Linear Rail: A 3-Scenario Guide for Procurement
Let's Be Direct: Linear Rails Are Not a One-Size-Fits-All Purchase
I handle purchasing for our small manufacturing shop—roughly $250k annually across about 15 different component categories. And if there's one thing I've learned buying linear motion components since 2020, it's this: the perfect linear guide for one setup is a complete nightmare for another.

The surprise wasn't the price difference between heavy-duty and standard. It was how much the block's internal clearance mattered.
What to look for:

- Check the load orientation. Is the force pushing straight down, or is there an offset? Offset loads require a different block selection, often with a moment load rating.
- Measure the space. If you're confined to a linear rail 500mm length or less, your options change. Longer rails have more mounting flexibility.
- Ask about preload. If the sales person looks confused, they're probably not the right vendor for a precision job.
