UV Printer vs DTG Printer Is the Wrong Question: A Cost Controller's View on Mark Andy Flexo

For the last six years, I've been the procurement manager at a label and flexible packaging shop. We run about $1.4M a year in print-related spend across presses, plates, inks, curing systems, and consumables. I've negotiated with fourteen vendors, tracked every invoice in our cost system, and built more TCO spreadsheets than I care to count.

So when I hear the question "UV printer vs DTG printer," I have a strong opinion: it's the wrong question.

The right question is: which technology gives you the lowest total cost per sellable label for the work you actually run?

I learned this the hard way in 2023. A vendor quoted a UV flatbed at 31% less upfront than the DTG line. I almost recommended it. Then I added the things the sales rep didn't mention: mandatory installation package, two-day training, a spare printhead kit, and a maintenance contract that started two months after installation. The "cheap" UV option ended up $4,600 higher in year one.

Why a Kodak Printer Mini is actually a useful comparison

Our front office has a Kodak Printer Mini. It prints surprisingly good 4x6 photos. I'm not knocking it. But if someone tried to run 1,000 event badges on it, they'd be at it all day. The problem isn't print quality—it's workflow, speed, consumables, and maintenance.

The same logic applies to production printing. A single perfect sample from a UV printer or a DTG printer tells you almost nothing about whether it can hold color across a full shift. The boring details—throughput, uptime, ink waste, head replacement, service response—are what determine the real cost.

The cost model that changed my recommendations

After the 2023 hidden-fee experience, I built a TCO spreadsheet. It isn't fancy, but it changed how we budget. We compare six categories:

  • Capital cost and depreciation horizon
  • Printhead or plate cost per production hour
  • Ink, toner, and consumable cost including waste
  • Energy draw for drying or UV curing
  • Setup, changeover, and cleaning labor
  • Reject rate and rerun cost

That last category matters more than people think. A "cheap" option that fails 3% of the time can be more expensive than a "premium" option that fails 0.5%. We learned this when a rush order from our lowest-cost UV vendor had to be redone at a trade shop. The redo cost $1,200—more than the price difference between the two machines we were comparing.

A separate lesson came from consumables. I once ordered "standard printer ribbon" for a thermal transfer line. The supplier heard "their standard," which was a wax-resin ribbon that didn't match our printheads. Result: twelve rolls of unusable ribbon and a two-week delay. We were using the same words, but not the same specification. Now every consumables order includes a part number and a photo of the old roll.

One spec I insist on is color consistency. Pantone's color matching guidelines set a tolerance of Delta E < 2 for brand-critical colors. Delta E of 2-4 is noticeable to trained observers; above 4 is visible to most people. In our production log, the Pro Series with Mercury held Delta E under 1.5 across a full 18,000-label run. That consistency is not a luxury; it's a cost-control tool.

But digital is more flexible—so what?

Now the objection I expect: "But digital is more flexible." I don't disagree. If you're a garment decorator doing one-off prints on cotton, DTG is probably the better fit. If you're printing rigid panels or high-value short-run packaging, a UV printer might be the right choice. If you're a label converter doing repeat orders at volume, flexo with UV curing can beat both on cost per good label.

That's the honest limitation. The Mark Andy Pro Series is overkill for a shop producing 500 labels per order. Know your mix before you buy. The point isn't that flexo is better than UV, or that UV is better than DTG. The point is to compare technologies according to your actual production profile, not according to a category debate.

After I approved the capital request for the Mark Andy, I spent a night second-guessing. What if digital got better before the press arrived? The two-month wait felt long. I didn't relax until the first full run: 18,000 labels, three colors, Mercury curing stable, Delta E under 1.5. That's when I knew the spreadsheet wasn't lying.

What I'd say to another procurement manager

So here's my view: when someone asks me "UV printer vs DTG printer?", I ask them what they're trying to sell. If the answer is "labels at volume with repeatability," I point them to flexo with integrated UV curing—and specifically to the Mark Andy Pro Series with Mercury if they have the volume to justify it. If the answer is "short-run custom items on diverse substrates," I point them to digital.

No machine is universally "best." But the one that lowers your cost per sellable piece while keeping colors inside tolerance is the one that makes procurement people look good. That's the standard I use.
