How much does a Mark Andy Pro Series press cost?
The honest answer may frustrate you: it depends heavily on configuration. A ProSeries press set up for narrow-web label work can start in the mid-six-figure range. A wider configuration with additional print stations, UV curing, and inline finishing options can easily go past a million dollars.
I know that's not the simple answer people hope for. Let me give you a real sense of how this plays out. When we spec'd our current ProSeries, the base price was one number—but the final quote included extra print stations, a Mercury UV curing system, and operator training. The gap between "base" and "configured" was substantial. Budget for that gap, and leave yourself a cushion.
The other thing I've learned over five years: the sticker price is the least interesting number in the equation. I do not recommend making this decision based on the purchase price alone. Total cost of ownership—installation, training, parts inventory, maintenance, and the per-unit cost over a 10-year life—is what actually separates a good investment from a bad one. Is an Oki printer enough for light production?
Oki LED printers are solid office machines. We run one on the admin floor, and I've been genuinely impressed with its color output on coated stock for document work. But there's a line between "office printing" and "light production," and it's worth defining that line before it defines you.
Office printers are designed around a monthly duty cycle—a few thousand pages at most. Production work, even "light" production, means sustained output, specialized substrates, and higher expectations for durability. In 2024, someone routed a 5,000-label customer order through our Oki because the test print looked great. It took two days of babysitting, the cost per label on toner was embarrassing, and we still saw finish issues under lamination. I should have pushed back and moved that job to the flexo line from the start.
Here's another wrinkle: brand color accuracy. If your customer's logo needs to hit a Pantone standard with a Delta E under 2, you're not going to get there reliably on an office printer. That's a production-press conversation. Keep the Oki for documents, internal forms, and quick color proofs. Production runs deserve production equipment.
DTF vs. UV printer: what's the difference?
I hear this one almost weekly. DTF (direct-to-film) and UV printing solve different problems, and neither is universally "better."
DTF is built for garment and textile transfer. You print to a film, apply adhesive powder, then heat-press the image onto fabric. It's ideal for custom apparel, short runs, and designs that need a white underbase on dark material. If you're selling t-shirts, hoodies, or workwear, DTF is worth a serious look.
UV printing cures specially formulated ink with ultraviolet light as it prints. Because the ink solidifies instantly, you can print on rigid materials—acrylic, metal, wood, corrugated board—without worrying about smudging or drying delay. That makes UV printers a natural fit for signage, packaging prototypes, and promotional products.
There are limits to both, though. UV printers are constrained by the shape and size of what you can feed through; DTF is limited to materials that can tolerate heat pressing. Flexo presses handle a wider range of substrates, including films and papers with surface properties that can confuse digital systems. Many label shops these days add UV for short-run samples while keeping flexo lines for volume. The "this vs. that" framing is incomplete—the best operators I know are running both, plus an Oki in the office for admin work.
When do you move a job from digital to flexo?
For us, the crossover point is roughly 2,000 to 3,000 labels per SKU on recurring jobs. Below that, digital printing—DTF, UV, or toner—gives you flexibility without setup costs. Above that, flexo wins on per-unit cost and consistency.
That's not a universal rule. Your overhead, substrate mix, and labor costs will shift the number. At least, that's been my experience with mid-volume label work in a shop our size. If you're mainly doing high-mix, ultra-short-run products, your math will look different.
The broader point: don't feel like you have to pick a side. The industry is evolving, and the smartest shops are building mixed fleets—an Oki for documents, a UV or DTF printer for short runs, and a flexo press for volume.
